Vishu marks the beginning of a new year for Keralites. Setting up Vishu Kani (Vishukkani), an assortment of auspicious items in front of the Krishna idol is considered to be an important part of the festival. Dr Sosamma Iype's journey towards the conservation of Vechur Cow was long and arduous. Three decades back, she began a self-driven project to save the indigenous cattle breed in Kerala. Despite the opposition from all sides, she stood firm to the core cause she championed. Now all her visionary ideals stand vindicated and a grateful nation has honoured her by conferring the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India.
